Empathy versus compassion

What does compassionate communication look like?

  • “I don’t know how to say this…”
  • “Could you please say that in another way? I’m not really understanding what you mean.”
  • “Could you tell me how that makes you feel?”
  • “Oh! That’s something someone else has said. Thank you for bringing it up.”
  • “I know you’re sensitive about [THING], and I want to be as kind as possible when I say…”

1. Focus on what they are saying.

2. PAUSE before responding.

3. Take care with your words.

4. Thank them, or show your appreciation.

5. Don’t assume the worst.

6. Don’t take it personally if they are not compassionately communicating.

7. Be authentic.

8. Practice.

Compassionate communication requires thought.
